Ode To The (Super)Soap Fan: Remembering Don Diamont’s Hilarious Cameo In ‘A Low Down Dirty Shame’

This will be the first entry in a new series called The (Super)Soap Fan. In it SoN will highlight and celebrate the most devoted soap opera fans around and how they show their love of their favorite soap with photo edits, GIFs, videos etc. on their social media. If you are a (Super)Soap Fan share your cool creations with us at contact@SoapOperaNation.com

The (Super)Soap Fan: Peaches Jordan, A Low Down Dirty Shame

Where were you in 1994? Do you remember the cameo Don Diamont did in Keenan Ivory Wayans’ movie A Low Down Dirty Shame? Diamont plays Chad a philandering heartthrob on As the Heart Turns, a fictitious soap opera. Jada Pinkett Smith plays Peaches Jordon the irritating, pixie-sized sidekick to Wayan’s private investigator character Andre Shame.

Pinkett’s first scene in the movie opens up with her in Shame’s office watching As the Heart Turns while bringing her girlfriend up to speed on the latest storylines over the phone. It’s a hilarious scene, one where any soap opera fan could easily see themselves passionately discussing their soap the way Peaches does with her friend.

See if you can identify the two soap opera cliches mentioned in the clip and leave them in the comments below.

Please note that after Chad is socked clear over a couple dining at a table in a sidewalk cafe, Peaches justifies her actions as a warning shot to Chad if he ever decides to sleep with his now dead wife’s sister.  Sleeping with two sisters you say? Oh, my! Where have I heard that before?

I love this clip for so many reasons, not the least of which is that I love soap operas in general and I have so much respect for the genre, but as a fan watching a ‘fan’ it’s easy to relate to Peaches and her reaction to fun, campy melodrama. Yes, Peaches is a Super(Soap Fan) and if you’re reading this chances are good you’re one too.

Editors Note: At the time of the movie’s theatrical debut Don Diamont was playing Brad Carlton on The Young and the Restless. Some of you may recall 1994 was a tough year for Brad; he suffered a heart attack after a particularly hot love making session with Lauren Fenmore, played by the always ageless Tracey Bregman.
